Sexy Fairytale

I created this for the J.Scott Campbell contest over at sketchoholic. I debated with myself quite a bit as to whether I should paint this or stick with a comic book style. I did try for an hour or so to paint it and it was turning out pretty horrible. Another one finished around 3 am or so.

Secret Santa

I painted this for a coworker of mine for secret santa. We have always joked about me making something unlike all the cute stuff I've been practicing lately. So...here it is.

Flight!

The topic for this contest was flight. I named this one "flight buddies" however. I remember I actually made this between the hours of 11pm and 4am. It was the first piece completed on my new Cintiq now that I think about it. The engine was a pain but I was happy with how the perspective overall worked out. I also painted this in passes much like how I would render out passes in 3D and composite in After Effects. For me it works better this way when there is complex lighting problems to solve.

Tonal Topic Entries

HornsAlien Bug

Guilty Pet
Most often when I'm starting a painting I tend to lockup on how to treat color. For me it's easier to handle form when working tonally-without color. Until I feel satisfied with rendering forms I may work more in black and white. Hopefully soon I'll make the big jump to working with color straight away. I'm looking for tips. sidebar: I think I might be colorblind.

Monday Morning Sketch Guy

Random warm up doodle which I liked. I used a value strip which worked out pretty nice for free flowing tonal work.

Grab bag o topic entries

Swimmer

Zombie Puppy

Pilot Creature

Worst Job

Afro

I've been toying with a few rendering techniques lately and I'm not really sold on either of them. Perhaps that's just due to very little patience...or lack of skill. Most likely lack of skill. :)

Halloween Series

Topic was Pointy Teeth

Long Nose

Glasses
Digger

In the spirit of Halloween I created this series. Each one was an entry into the daily contests over at sketchoholic.com. I really liked this dark style. I would say this style comes very natural to me. Dark, twisted, scary...yup...that's me.

Zombie Penguin!

A recent sketchoholic entry. This time for a series on zombie cute animals. I chose to emulate a 50's horror movie theme. My crappy painting skills actually fit this style quite well... Next up: Bunnies. :)

Space Fisherman

I ran across this sketch tonight and I found it rather cute. Someday when I'm less busy I'd like to add color.

Recent Marathon Work

My friend Syd and I have been leveling up with 1 hour speed painting sessions at sketchoholic. It has really been one of the most fulfilling art experiences I've ever had. Here are a few of the recent paintings I've done. I'm looking forward to how much we will grow in the coming months.

Violator

I used to draw this guy a lot when I was in high school. This is the Violator from the Spawn comic book. Todd McFarlane the creater is probably the #1 reason I draw today...ever since Spiderman #16.

Friday night stress painting

I painted this to de-stress from a really difficult week. It helped tons and actually alleviated my headache. The concept was "Creepy Birthday Party".

Monday night sketch

Testing out a few tone ideas here. Still focusing on tone and the definition of volume. Color? I think I'm still far from tackling that beast.

More tone studies

I've been trying to observe tone...everywhere. Really concentrating on bounce light and "lost edges". Painting everyday has helped tons.

tuesday practice

Feeling a little better with tonality today. Can't wait to practice more tonight!
